About the Role As a Veterinary Anesthesia & Surgery Technician, you will play a critical role in patient safety, surgical success, and client communication. This is a hands-on, fast-paced position ideal for a CVT who enjoys anesthesia, surgical preparation, and direct involvement in complex cases. This role is ideal for a technician who takes pride in excellent medicine and believes in team work to make that happen. We are looking for someone who wants to lead by example from the floor, work with a dedicated team, and lend to a surgical service that runs with precision, safety, and pride. At VSS, our technicians are treated like medical professionals. You will work closely with surgeons, technicians, and support staff to ensure every patient receives exceptional care—from admission through recovery.
What You’ll Do
Patient & Client Care
Conduct patient intake and assist with surgical appointments
Obtain and review patient histories, bloodwork, and imaging
Communicate findings with surgeons and document medical records accurately
Perform venipuncture and run in-house pre-operative lab work
Conduct post-operative follow-up calls and assist with patient rechecks (including radiographs, suture/staple removal, and minor wound care)
Review discharge instructions and medications with pet owners
Anesthesia & Surgical Support
Place IV catheters and administer anesthetic medications
Intubate and extubate patients
Operate and maintain anesthesia and monitoring equipment
Monitor anesthesia (HR, BP, SpO, ETCO, temperature) and maintain detailed records
Troubleshoot anesthesia and surgical equipment as needed
Maintain accurate controlled drug logs
Assist with patient clipping, preparation, and draping
Scrub in to assist during surgery (training provided)
Recover and closely monitor patients' post-anesthesia
Clinical & Hospital Support
Obtain pre- and post-operative radiographs
Clean and prepare patients post-operatively
Perform treatments, assist with patient mobility, and provide comfort care
Clean and disinfect surgical suites and common areas
Process surgical instruments and packs using ultrasonic cleaners, autoclaves, plasma, and gas sterilizers
Maintain inventory and surgical supplies
Prepare lab samples, referral documentation, and medical forms
Assist with urgent or add-on surgical cases as needed
Cross-train to support additional hospital functions
Participate in CPR codes and ongoing clinical training
Schedule & Work-Life Balance Monday–Thursday | 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM No weekends. No holidays. Predictable schedule in a specialty setting
Qualifications
Active Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) license (or equivalent)
Strong skills in anesthesia induction and monitoring, surgical preparation, venipuncture, IV catheter placement, and in-house diagnostics
Display well thought out clinical decision-making during complex cases
Ability to multitask, stay organized, and remain calm in a fast-paced environment
Excellent communication skills and a team-oriented mindset
Ability to safely lift and assist patients weighing 50–100+ lbs
Willingness to pursue CPR certification and ongoing continuing education
