Description
The Wildlife Hospital at Lion Country Safari is seeking a qualified and motivated candidate for the position of full-time Associate Veterinarian. The growing hospital team currently consists of a board-certified Senior Veterinarian, an associate veterinarian, hospital manager, two full time certified veterinary technicians and one part time veterinary technician, and a hospital assistant. The associate veterinarian is involved in all aspects of this zoological park’s veterinary program. Located in Loxahatchee, Florida, near West Palm Beach, Lion Country Safari is a diverse, AZA-accredited zoological park, which is home to ~650 animals. The park boasts a 320-acre preserve in which numerous species, including chimpanzees, non-domestic hoofstock, lions, and rhinos roam freely in spacious habitats. Additionally, a variety of birds, mammals, and reptiles are displayed and provide close-up, interactive experiences for visitors.
General Job Description
Under the supervision of the Senior Veterinarian, the Associate Veterinarian’s duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Providing medical care to the collection animals in all forms of routine health procedures, field immobilizations, administration of medicine and anesthetics, husbandry, surgery, necropsy, etc.
Coordinating the implementation of preventative healthcare programs for quarantine, parasite control, vaccination programs, infectious disease testing, periodic reviews of diet and husbandry, etc.
Facilitating in animal acquisition and disposition; ensure proper quarantine procedures and pre-shipment health exams.
Maintaining accurate medical records
Positive and effective communication with veterinary, curatorial and keeper staff
Record keeping, lab work, maintaining equipment, preparing medications, and cleaning as required.
Mentoring senior veterinary students and interns and coordinating visiting veterinary student externs
Providing excellent customer service

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited institution and licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the US.
Minimum 1 year veterinary internship or equivalent required.
Minimum 2 years of Zoological/exotic animal experience preferred.
Must be able to obtain a Florida veterinary license within 3 months of employment.
Must obtain USDA category 2 accreditation within 3 months of employment.
Valid driver’s license
Special Qualifications
Willingness to work overtime and be available for emergency work.
Must be able to work weekends and holidays.
Willingness to work outdoors, be able to physically lift heavy objects (up to 70 lbs).
Understands the physical and health related risks inherent to working with wildlife and zoo animals.
Able to work as a member of a team as well as individually with minimal supervision.
